How to hold a PS1 controller?
Share
The PlayStation 1 (PS1) controller, also known as the DualShock (or original PlayStation Controller before analog sticks), has a unique design that can be held in different ways depending on the type of game you’re playing.
Basic Grip (Standard Holding Technique)
This is the most common way to hold a PS1 controller, used for most games:
- Place your thumbs on the D-pad (left side) and buttons (right side).
- Wrap your index fingers around the L1/R1 buttons.
- Rest your middle fingers on the back of the controller for stability.
- If using a DualShock controller, rest your thumbs on the joysticks instead of the D-pad.
This grip is great for games like Crash Bandicoot, Final Fantasy VII, and Metal Gear Solid.
Alternative Grip Styles
1. Claw Grip (For Faster Input in Action Games)
- Use your index finger to press the face buttons while keeping your thumb on the right joystick.
- Your middle fingers handle L1/R1, and ring fingers help with L2/R2.
- Common in games like Tekken 3, Resident Evil 2, or Medal of Honor.
2. Arcade Grip (For Fighting Games)
- Hold the controller in your left hand and tap the face buttons with your right index and middle fingers.
- Similar to an arcade stick setup, making it easier for combos in Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Tekken.
Tips for Comfort and Control
✔ Relax your grip to prevent hand fatigue.
✔ Adjust finger positioning based on the game’s control scheme.
✔ Use a DualShock controller if possible—analog sticks provide better precision.
