What is the scar under Luffy's eye?

The scar under Luffy's left eye is one of his most distinctive features. It’s a small, curved mark that he got during his childhood, and there’s an interesting backstory behind it.

The Origin of Luffy's Scar

Luffy got this scar when he was just a child, at the age of 7. It was a result of a fight he had with his childhood friend, Shanks, the captain of the Red-Haired Pirates.

When Luffy was a kid, he looked up to Shanks and the pirates, but after a series of events, he ended up in a dangerous situation. Luffy, being his stubborn and impulsive self, wanted to prove his strength and act tough in front of Shanks and the crew. At one point, he tried to act like he could take care of himself and ended up getting into a dangerous situation with a sea king (a giant sea monster) while on the island.

Shanks and the crew saved Luffy from the creature, but during this moment, Luffy made the impulsive decision to challenge Shanks. In the process, he ended up getting the scar under his eye from Shanks' finger. Shanks intentionally gave Luffy the scar in order to stop him from acting recklessly.

Why is the Scar Important?

The scar under Luffy's eye is significant for several reasons:

  1. Symbol of his Childhood: The scar is a reminder of Luffy’s childhood, a time when he was still learning about life, his limits, and the consequences of his actions. It symbolizes his reckless nature and the love and care that Shanks, in his own way, showed toward him.

  2. A Mark of Strength: Despite the scar being the result of a fight, it also serves as a mark of Luffy’s growth. As he grows older and more powerful, the scar under his eye is a symbol of his resilience, reminding him of the lessons he learned as a child.

  3. Shanks’ Influence: The scar also represents Shanks’ profound impact on Luffy’s life. It was Shanks who gave Luffy his treasured straw hat and inspired him to become a pirate, and this scar is one more connection between them. It reflects the bond they share, even though Luffy has long since set out on his own journey.

Luffy’s Scar and the Will to Protect

The scar under Luffy's eye can also be seen as a symbol of his strong will to protect the people he loves. Over the course of his adventures, Luffy’s body has gone through many physical changes, and he’s faced countless challenges. But just like his other scars, the one under his eye shows that Luffy has never shied away from the battles he’s fought—he faces them head-on, no matter the cost.

In the end, this little scar is an important part of Luffy’s identity, a constant reminder of who he is, where he came from, and the bonds that shaped him.
