Can PS5 run PS1?

The PS5 is not natively backward compatible with PS1 games, meaning you can't directly play PS1 discs or download PS1 games from the PlayStation Store for PS1 via the PS5's physical or digital storefront. However, there are still ways to play PS1 games on a PS5, but with some limitations:

Ways to Play PS1 Games on PS5:

  1. PlayStation Now (PSN Subscription Service):

    • PlayStation Now (now combined with PlayStation Plus Premium) allows access to a library of classic games, including PS1 titles. This service is available through streaming, meaning you can play PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4 games on your PS5, provided the game is available in the PlayStation Now catalog.
    • To access PS1 games through PS Plus Premium, simply subscribe to the plan and browse through the catalog of retro games.
    • Example of Available PS1 Games: Final Fantasy VII, Tekken 3, and others.
  2. PlayStation Store (via Backward Compatibility for PS4 Games):

    • Although PS5 doesn’t have native PS1 backward compatibility, some PS1 games are available for download on the PlayStation Store for the PS4 and playable on PS5 via backward compatibility. Games like Final Fantasy VII and Crash Bandicoot can be purchased and played on the PS5 through this method.
  3. PS1 Classics (on PS4, but playable on PS5):

    • If you already have purchased PS1 Classic games (like from previous PlayStation Store sales), you can still play them on your PS5. These are typically PS1 titles that have been remastered or made available as part of the "PS1 Classics" collection on PSN.
    • You would need to go to the PlayStation Store on PS5, find these older classics, and download them to play. Keep in mind, this is dependent on the game being available on the store for PS4 (as PS5 doesn't have a separate PS1 games section).
  4. Using PS1 Physical Discs (PS4 Only):

    • PS5 does not have a physical PS1 disc drive for backward compatibility. However, if you own a PS4 and have PS1 physical discs, you can insert them into the PS4 to play the games, and in turn, some of these games may be playable on PS5 via backward compatibility (but not from the PS5's own disc drive).

Summary:

  • PS5 doesn't natively support PS1 discs or digital downloads, but you can still access PS1 games through PlayStation Now/PlayStation Plus Premium for streaming, or by purchasing PS1 Classics available on the PS Store.
  • PS4 compatibility: If you already own PS1 games on your PS4, you can play them on PS5 via backward compatibility.
